Investigation and Environmental Monitoring Practice Exam

The best method to control powdery mildew on grapes is to treat regularly with sulfur dust until the fruit begins to ripen. Sulfur is an effective fungicide that specifically targets the powdery mildew pathogen. Its use during the appropriate growth stages of grapevines helps to inhibit the development of the fungus, preventing it from damaging the leaves and fruit. Moreover, sulfur is a widely used organic option that poses minimal risk to the environment and non-target organisms when applied correctly.

Applying sulfur dust before the fruit ripens ensures the chemical is not hazardous to human consumption of the grapes, while still providing effective protection against this prevalent fungal disease. Timely and regular application is key, as it must be done before significant outbreaks occur to maintain plant health and yield.

While other options might have some utility in plant health management, they do not specifically address the root issue of powdery mildew control as effectively as sulfur dust treatment does during the critical periods of grape development.
